Our Mission

Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) is responsible for the protection and commercialization of intellectual property at UMass Lowell. Faculty and staff who are looking for information on how to protect their intellectual property should visit the Faculty Assistance section. Invention disclosure forms are also available. Companies and entrepreneurs interested in licensing technology or sponsoring research at the University should visit the Technology Licensing page.

Our Mission

In addition to the mission of educating a talented workforce and conducting cutting-edge research, the University of Massachusetts Lowell plays a vital role in technology commercialization and economic development for the state and the Merrimack Valley Region, in particular. Beginning in 1994, technology commercialization takes place within the Office of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP), where we work with the faculty to commercialize their technologies that evolve as new inventions.

Functions
The activities of CVIP include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Evaluate disclosed inventions by University researchers
  • License University technologies
  • Develop industry partnerships between University faculty and companies
  • Participate in new company formation based on University technologies
  • Support the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center (MTTC)
  • Advise the University on entrepreneurial and intellectual property-related issues
  • Administer material transfer agreements and confidential disclosure agreements
  • Assist in drafting intellectual property-related agreements and terms for sponsored research
  • Adhere to the FederalBayh-Dole Actrequirements
